Fairport Harbor Village is a small community, but it earned some big awards in the 2025 America in Bloom competition.
AIB held its annual symposium and awards ceremony recently in Rochester, Michigan.
The village won the Overall Impression Outstanding Achievement Award, The News-Herald’s Bill DeBus reported.
In addition, Fairport Harbor received a special tribute for Celebrating Heritage from AIB professional advisers Connie Baggett and Brian Sullivan. They spent two days this summer touring the village and meeting government officials, residents and volunteers.
Village Administrator Lukas Darling said Fairport Harbor is deeply honored to receive national recognition from America in Bloom.
“These accolades reflect the pride, dedication and collaborative spirit of our residents, volunteers and local organizations who work tirelessly to preserve Fairport Harbor’s rich history while enhancing its beauty,” Darling said.
In addition, Darling commended Village Council members Christina Bacnik and Elisabeth Shaver for playing a pivotal role in bringing America in Bloom to Fairport Harbor. Shaver attended the organization’s symposium and accepted the awards on behalf of the community.
America in Bloom, based in Columbus, is a nonprofit entity that promotes nationwide beautification through education and community involvement by encouraging the use of flowers, plants, trees, and other environmental and lifestyle enhancements.
The organization offers different levels of programs for towns. Fairport Harbor is participating in Level 3 — the highest tier — which involves becoming a full member of the organization and competing in its national awards program.
Baggett and Sullivan visited the village on July 21 and 22. They assessed Fairport Harbor’s efforts in the areas of community vitality, floral impact, landscaped areas, urban forestry, environmental initiatives, celebrating heritage and overall impressions.
“We thank the AIB advisers for their thoughtful evaluation and celebrate this achievement as a testament to what makes Fairport Harbor a special place,” Darling said. “We’ve always known how special our community is — and it’s incredibly rewarding to see that recognized on a national stage.”
The News-Herald commends Fairport Harbor for winning the AIB awards, and encourages all village residents to play a part in keeping the community as a place that makes a great impression on visitors.
