Cuomo Says He’ll Move to Florida If Mamdani Wins NYC Mayoral Race

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo joked over the weekend that he would move to Florida if Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani wins the race for New York City mayor, as reported by Fox News.

The remark came during a private political breakfast held Saturday at 75 Main in Southampton, hosted by supermarket magnate and GOP donor John Catsimatidis.

“It’s all or nothing. We either win or even I will move to Florida. God forbid,” Cuomo said, according to attendees.

The former Democratic governor, who lost to Mamdani in the party’s primary, is now preparing to challenge the 33-year-old Queens assemblyman as an independent candidate in the general election.

Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, has drawn attention for his proposals, including a citywide rent freeze and a plan for government-run grocery stores.

The event, attended by political insiders including Ambassador George Tsunis and Cuomo’s former aide Melissa DeRosa, was reportedly jolted by Cuomo’s Florida comment, which one attendee described as a “wow” moment.

Rich Azzopardi, Cuomo’s senior adviser, defended the remark in a statement to the New York Post. “Governor Cuomo would never give up on New York,” Azzopardi said.

“The line underscored the stakes in this election and the risk of electing a dangerously inexperienced, hate-spewing 33-year-old socialist to lead the city.”

Throughout the gathering, Cuomo repeatedly referred to Mamdani as “the kid” and sharply criticized his policy proposals.

He described Mamdani’s rent freeze plan as a “death sentence” for landlords and housing supply and labeled his campaign platform as “unrealistic bumper sticker slogans.”

Mamdani’s campaign did not respond to requests for comment.

Cuomo also took aim at Mayor Eric Adams, who is seeking reelection as an independent. “We haven’t had a competent mayor since Bloomberg,” Cuomo said, accusing Adams of lacking focus due to ethics concerns and ongoing investigations.

When asked about Cuomo’s comments by the New York Post, Adams responded, “If he’s serious about moving to Florida, he should go ahead. He’s already spent three weekends in the Hamptons.”

The mayoral race also includes Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, making it one of the most unconventional contests in New York City history. Cuomo’s campaign has not responded to further requests for comment.
