Missing North Carolina Woman Found Alive Nine Months After Disappearance Near Death Valley

A North Carolina woman who vanished nine months ago near Death Valley National Park has been located alive, according to the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office, as reported by The New York Post.

Kelsey Pittman, 33, had been missing since November 2024. On Tuesday, the sheriff’s office announced on Facebook that she was found alive in Colorado.

“The Inyo County Sheriff’s Office is relieved to announce that Kelsey Pittman has been located alive in the state of Colorado,” the statement read.

No further information was provided regarding the circumstances of her disappearance or her activities over the past nine months. “Out of respect for her privacy and that of her family, no further details will be released,” the agency said.

Pittman’s last known contact with law enforcement occurred in Utah in November 2024. Months later, on February 9, 2025, her 2009 Chevrolet HHR was discovered abandoned in a remote area off Highway 190, near the edge of Death Valley National Park.

The location, known as “Slab City,” is on private property outside the park’s official boundaries and is frequently used by winter campers, according to law enforcement.

Deputies confirmed the car was registered to Pittman. “A thorough search of both the vehicle and the surrounding area, however, revealed no sign of Pittman. This led to the initiation of an extensive missing person investigation and search effort,” the sheriff’s office reported.

From February through June 2025, law enforcement agencies and volunteers conducted wide-ranging efforts to locate her, including ground teams, aerial searches, cadaver dogs, drone units, and search and rescue crews.

Despite these efforts, no trace of Pittman was discovered until this week’s update from Colorado.

Pittman is one of several individuals who have resurfaced alive after going missing in wilderness areas this year. In a separate case, hiker Tiffany Slaton was found in May 2025 after spending three weeks stranded in California’s eastern Sierra Nevada mountains.

Slaton survived after being caught in a blizzard by taking shelter in an unlocked cabin at a closed resort. She was eventually found after eating wild leeks and receiving a peanut butter and jelly sandwich from the property owner.

Authorities have not confirmed if Pittman received any assistance in Colorado or if she returned to North Carolina. The investigation into her disappearance remains open, though officials have stated they will not be releasing further information at this time.
